Red Fever
Many years ago around the time the Desert Ski Club was formed and well before many of us were even born, there was a political climate of concern over communists in our populace and in the government. Actors were blacklisted from Hollywood for their political socialist viewpoints. Joe McCarthy was the senator from Wisconsin that lead the movement to ferret out suspected “Red sympathizers” This time was known as Red Fever.
Fast Forward to today for the 2026 - 2027 ski season where The Desert Ski Club has another type of Red Fever, namely Red Mountain Ski Resort fever, which can only be cured with a trip to Rossland, British Columbia. We will attempt to satisfy our own Red Fever with fervor at Red Mountain.
Red mountain has 119 trails serviced by 8 chairlifts. No one is required to memorize all 119 trails. The resort has runs for every type of skier, and is a Club favorite.
We will be admitted to battle our Red Fever at The Josie Hotel, high-end accommodations catering to the discriminating afflicted. The Josie has a nice eating establishment in it known as The Velvet. We will be having our welcome breakfast there as well as our Farewell Dinner. Every morning a breakfast is included within our lodging price. I cannot say of The Velvet whether it is Red or not. It does however sound like Red Carpet treatment!
This trip is a car pool trip. Trip participants should arrange the fellow travelers travel companions, Red sympathizers, and Red Fever victims who will accompany them to the resort. Your Dear Leader (myself) and esteemed Trip Director Jay Reinhardt can help match up vehicles with bellybuttons if our assistance is needed. The wonderful thing about this being a car pool trip versus a bus trip is that a shuttle service should not be necessary. As many wonderful things as there are at Red Mountain and Rossland, BC, the shuttle service is definitely not one of them. The times I have attended Red mountain and used the shuttle service, I was definitely seeing RED!!
The time frame planned for this trip is from February 18 to 22, 2027. One could find themselves skiing 3 days or 4, depending on the severity of your Red Fever. The price of $545 or thereabouts doesn’t include lift tickets. Red Mountain does accept Ikon Pass or Indy Add On Pass. Purchasing your own tickets won’t be too awful bad given our exchange rate of 70% Canadian to American Dollar.
By the way, The Josie is a ski in ski out establishment. Desert Ski Clubbers, are you Red-Eye for fun!
Your Red Fever Trip Leader,
John Morris
